When you are looking into web hosting one of the things you’re going to be looking at is Domain Hosted Email accounts.  With the domain hosted email you can access the email through a web portal commonly known as webmail.  The other option is to set up your email so you can access it through an email client.  Some of the more popular email clients are Microsoft Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird.  You can also set up the email on a mobile device such as an iPhone or an Android device.

Once you have created the email account in your hosting account you will be given the login credentials.  You will use the login credentials to set up the email client.

For the most part, web hosting providers will offer 2 options for an email with an email client.  The two options are Pop3 or Imap. They both have their own functionality and uses.  If you would like more information on the 2 options you can check out my full article Email Acess POP3 Vs. IMAP.

No matter what hosting provider you are using or server there are server credentials that will be constant across any hosting provider.  Those credentials that you will need to get to set up the email client.  You will need to get the following:

  • Incoming mail server and port.
  • Outgoing mail server and port.
  • Username
  • Password

The incoming and outgoing mail server could be the same. With most hosting providers you could just use mail.domain.com where you put your domain in there.  With most providers, the username is going to be the full email address.  The password you will use is the one you set when you created the email account.

One side note that confuses people when they are setting up email on any iOS enabled device is the outgoing settings.  When you look at the settings it says they are optional.  However, with most hosting companies the outgoing email will not work unless you have it filled out.  Once you have it all filled out it will take a few moments to process.  It will also tell you that it’s not secure, however, you can continue through this warning.

I hope this helps with setting up an email account on your email client.  If you have any questions please feel free to leave a comment.  You can also Contact Me and I would be happy to help you.
