Linux is Born

Back in Linux’s infancy, it was a big hairy deal. You had to know how to use the command line just to install Linux. Everything ran off the command line. If you didn’t know what you were doing you could mess up the Operating System something fierce.

The GUI

Linux

Since Linux has been around for quite some time there are multiple Distributions (Distro). Many of the distros have a pre-installed Graphical User Interface (GUI). The GUI makes the Operating System look much like a Windows or Mac Operating System. Depending on who you ask you might get a different answer on which Linux Distribution to start with. In my opinion, the easiest Linux. Distro to start with is Ubuntu. You can install Ubuntu which is a Debian based Operating System. The initial release was by Canonical LTD in October of 2004.

Windows

Once you have Ubuntu installed, You boot the first time and you’re presented with a GUI. The GUI will allow you to manipulate the Operating System much like the Windows Operating System. You can change the background. Most of the programs you would use on a Windows machine you can install on Ubuntu. You would open the Ubuntu Software Center and find the programs you are looking for and install them, all you need to know is the admin password.

Command Line

If you get brave you can open up Terminal to make changes through the command line, rather than using the GUI. Installation through the command line will surprise you how simple it is. The nice thing with Ubuntu is you have the GUI, as well as the option to use the command line if you want. Once you get more experience with Ubuntu and Linux, you will feel more comfortable making changes. You can make changes to directories, files, and even the Operating System through the command line.

Using The Operating System

I enjoy running Linux. so much that I’m often helping others install and start using any distro. I want everyone to be able to experience it, and see what it offers. It’s not for everyone, but I think there is a large majority of people that can run and use Linux.

Linux may be scary for the average user to get started. Rest easy because there is a plethora of information online. You can find any information no matter what distro you are using with a google search.
